The green heart of the Ruhr Metropolis

The Emscher Landscape Park combines industrial heritage and landscape art with a lot of nature. The park in the northern Ruhr region consists of gardens and parks, foot and cycle paths and numerous tips with unique landmarks.

River valley instead of a sewer

The Emscher, which was degraded to a sewer at the beginning of the 20th century due to the rapid industrial and demographic growth of the Ruhr region, lends the Landscape Park its name. The renaturation of the river began in the 1990s, gradually creating the new Emscher Valley. The huge leisure and recreational area is criss-crossed by kilometres of paths, picnic sites and playgrounds, and the Ruhr Regional Association has taken over the maintenance and development of the Landscape Park.

Haus Ripshorst

Detailed information regarding the Emscher Landscape Park can be obtained at the information centre at Haus Ripshorst in Oberhausen. A multimedia exhibition presents 15 important park sites. Around 100 events dealing with nature and environment are on the programme annually. Since 2010, one can also go on a digital treasure hunt with GPS equipment: Geocaching tours lead you around Haus Ripshorst, as well as the Hoheward tip in Herten and Rheinelbe in Gelsenkirchen.

Art on tips

The many spoil tips in the Emscher Landscape Park, which have become popular excursion destinations, are remnants of the mining era. A climb of 200 metres is negotiated by bicycle or on foot over greened slopes. The plateaus offer panoramic views of the Ruhr Metropolis and its unique landmark art. Amongst the art objects on the tips are the “Bramme für das Ruhrgebiet” (slab for the Ruhr region) by Richard Serra on the Schurenbach tip in Essen, the horizon observatory and the obelisks as sundials on the Hoheward tip on the city boundary of Herten/Recklinghausen and the amphitheatre on the Haniel tip in Bottrop. The huge steel Tetrahedron on the Beckstraße tip in Bottrop and the nightly light pillar over the Rungenberg tip in Gelsenkirchen are visible from a distance.

Wild and green nature

Tips and wastelands have attracted new natural growth. In the Emscher Landscape Park one can see the beauty of the animals and plants that have adapted to difficult conditions. Transport routes from industrial times have been transformed into cycle and hiking paths. Via these paths you can reach gardens and parks, which have been created as green oases around the former collieries, for example on the World Heritage Site Zollverein in Essen or on the grounds of the former Nordstern colliery in Gelsenkirchen.

In Duisburg the “Garden of Remembrance” in the Inner Harbour preserves the ground plans of the warehouses in the midst of the newly developed recreational area. In the Ripshorst shrubbery in Oberhausen, visitors are taken on a journey through time over 60 million years of natural history and can discover 6,000 trees and shrubs.
